Revolutionizing Navy Training Development with Aptima's NAUTICAL AI Solution

Introduction to NAUTICAL AI Solution

Aptima, Inc., based in Orlando, FL, has recently been awarded a $3.2 million contract by the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division (NAWCTSD) to develop and mature NAUTICAL, an innovative AI solution aimed at revolutionizing instructional systems design (ISD) tasks and workflows to accelerate training analysis. NAUTICAL, which stands for Novel AI Utility for Training, Instruction, and Comprehensive Analytic Learning, utilizes large language models and generative AI to automate the labor-intensive processes involved in ensuring that sailors receive timely and relevant training.

Addressing Ready Relevant Learning Challenge

Aptima secured this contract after excelling in the 'Ready Relevant Learning Challenge,' a competition organized by NAWCTSD and Central Florida Tech Grove. This challenge sought AI solutions that could efficiently produce quality task analysis, learning analysis, and media selection in reduced time. NAUTICAL addresses the Navy's model of Ready Relevant Learning (RRL) aimed at enhancing warfighter readiness by providing well-trained Sailors in reduced time to adapt to dynamic geopolitical changes.

Advantages of NAUTICAL AI Solution

The NAUTICAL AI solution empowers instructional system designers (ISDs) to leverage large language models, enabling them to conduct task analysis swiftly and produce validated outputs efficiently. By automating the analysis of extensive technical documentation and training materials, NAUTICAL streamlines the ISD workflow, allowing ISDs, instructors, and subject matter experts to focus on enhancing the overall training experience. This tool significantly reduces the time needed for training development and supports a more agile and responsive training cycle.

Future Applications and Benefits

Under the current contract, Aptima will further develop NAUTICAL to support the US Navy EA (Engineering Aide) rating, with plans to extend its application to other Navy ratings and potentially other service branches. By combining AI capabilities with human expertise, NAUTICAL can deliver accurate solutions efficiently, with the human-in-the-loop ensuring the final quality and relevance of training analysis. Over time, as NAUTICAL learns from human inputs, the quality of analyses can be continuously improved, leading to enhanced training quality and responsiveness to evolving mission demands.

Enhancing Training Quality and Efficiency

By utilizing the NAUTICAL AI solution, Aptima aims to not only reduce the time required for training development but also enhance the quality of training materials. Through streamlined feedback loops between the Fleet operations and training institutions, NAUTICAL ensures that training remains current and aligned with the latest mission requirements. This approach not only optimizes the training development process but also contributes to maintaining a highly responsive and adaptive training environment for the Navy.
