Experience in Nuclear Industry Testing
BWX Technologies, Inc.'s (BWXT) Fatigue and Fracture Laboratory (F&FL) is a high-tech facility that specializes in conducting various mechanical test methods on metallic samples, especially those used in the nuclear industry. The laboratory is well-equipped with experienced engineers and technicians who ensure precise and replicable test results. It also collaborates closely with the Hot Machine Shop to streamline the testing process and uphold quality standards. One of the significant highlights of F&FL's expertise is its handling of over 40 Reactor Vessel Surveillance Program (RVSP) capsules. These capsules, which undergo irradiation in reactors for different durations, are crucial components for surveillance and testing purposes. Additionally, the F&FL has played a pivotal role in several projects involving the mechanical testing of highly irradiated components, such as vessel internals, extracted from reactors.
State-of-the-Art Equipment and Safety Measures
The F&FL boasts cutting-edge equipment, including two MTS 220 kN servohydraulic test machines and a Satec 240 ft-lb Charpy impact tester. To ensure the safety of operators, these machines are surrounded by a protective shield made of 2-4 inches of lead. The laboratory frequently conducts Charpy impact, tension, and compact tension fracture toughness tests in accordance with ASTM standards. Furthermore, the F&FL is equipped with remote handling tools and automatic specimen loading devices to facilitate the transfer and loading of specimens. The facility is designed to handle specimens with specific radiation levels, with additional shielding available for handling specimens with higher radiation levels if needed. Notably, the F&FL successfully completed a project involving highly-irradiated bend test specimens that required additional shielding due to their high radiation levels, demonstrating the laboratory's adaptability and commitment to conducting various types of mechanical tests.
Comprehensive Testing Services Offered
The F&FL offers a wide range of testing services to meet the diverse needs of its clients in the nuclear industry. These services include Charpy impact testing (ASTM E23 and A370), tension testing (ASTM E8 and E21), fracture toughness testing (ASTM E1820), low-cycle fatigue testing (ASTM E606), high-cycle fatigue testing (ASTM E466), fatigue crack growth rate testing (ASTM E647), transition region fracture toughness testing (ASTM E1921), Vickers and Knoop microhardness testing, and miniature specimen machining and testing. By adhering to stringent ASTM standards, the F&FL ensures the reliability and accuracy of all test results, providing clients with valuable insights into the mechanical properties and performance of their materials.
