Context: Safety and Optimization of Airspace Management in Oman
The Oman Minister of Transport and Communications initiated efforts to enhance air security and optimize airspace utilization in the country. With the Muscat control center overseeing Oman's airspace, there was a need for a system that could efficiently handle in-flight and approach surveillance, presenting information in a manner conducive to controller decision-making. Interoperability was crucial, requiring seamless information exchange with systems and control centers in other nations involved in air control operations. This system would be implemented at the Muscat traffic control center, managing the upper airspace and offering support to en-route flights, approach control services at Muscat and Salalah International Airports, and backup for the systems of various regional airports.
Solution: Turnkey Air Traffic Management System
Indra proposed a turnkey project for an advanced automated air traffic management system that granted controllers a comprehensive view of aircraft movements within their airspace jurisdiction. The control station, built on a holistic approach, featured a large high-resolution screen enabling rapid access to various applications, radar data, weather information, and flight plans. Designed with user-friendliness in mind, the system streamlined controllers' tasks, allowing for efficient decision-making amid increasing air traffic volumes. The open architecture design ensured adaptability to future technological advancements, facilitating seamless integration of updates and new software versions without system modifications. The deployed system supported all of Oman's airports and control centers, enhancing flight plan management, trajectory calculation, and conflict detection capabilities.
Benefits: Safety and Ergonomics
The implemented system offers several benefits, including all information being consolidated on a single monitor for easy access and viewing. The virtual environment minimizes visual distractions, ensuring controllers can focus on critical tasks. Quick access to flight plans and real-time weather information enhances decision-making efficiency. Controllers can customize on-screen information based on their needs, and a robust contingency center is in place to address any incidents promptly, ensuring safety. Further enhancements like expanded aeronautical messaging management system connectivity to the international network contribute to operational efficiency and safety measures.
